Conversion first. Any price can be turned into an implied probability, and that is the only form in which two prices are comparable. A decimal price converts by dividing one by the price. A positive American price converts by dividing one hundred by the price plus one hundred; a negative one by dividing the absolute price by that same absolute price plus one hundred. Once every outcome is a percentage, the market is legible.

Then the margin. Add the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market. A fair market would total one hundred per cent. The excess is what the book charges, and it is the single most useful number you can extract from a price list. A two-way market at 105 per cent is charging five points; one at 112 is charging twelve, and no headline price tells you which you are looking at.

Esports margins run wider than on major traditional sport, for two structural reasons. The modelling is harder, because rosters change, patches alter the game itself, and historical data is thinner. And liquidity is lower, so the book carries more risk per unit of money taken. Both are legitimate reasons for a wider margin and neither is disclosed.

Then the movement. A price at release reflects the model. A price at the start of a match reflects the model plus everything the market believed in between. Large late movement usually means information arrived: a roster change, a substitution, a confirmation of who is actually playing, and in esports that information arrives later and matters more than in traditional sport.

This is where the statistical input becomes the interesting part, and it is why this section sits on a statistics reference. A probability estimate is built from historical performance, and the historical performance available for esports is compromised in specific, catalogued ways. A model fed a merged casual-and-ranked ratio is treating a player who warms up outside ranked as worse than they are. A model fed account-level Apex figures is fed a floor rather than a measurement, because collection depends on which trackers were equipped. A model fed a Counter-Strike figure without naming the match service has read one pool and priced another.

Professional esports data is better than public account data, teams and leagues publish structured match records, and the sample for a top team is dense, but the same class of error recurs at that level in a different form. A roster change invalidates the history a price was built on, and the price cannot know that until someone tells it. This is the reason esports prices move harder on roster news than on form.

Two habits follow for anyone reading these prices. Convert before comparing, always, because a decimal and an American price are not comparable by eye and a book can look generous on one leg while charging more across the market. And check what the price is assuming about the roster, because that assumption is the most fragile input in the whole model.

One more piece of arithmetic is worth carrying: the break-even hit rate implied by a price. A price whose implied probability is forty per cent needs to win more than forty per cent of the time to break even, before the margin is considered. Stating the required hit rate out loud is the fastest way to notice when a price is asking for something implausible, and it is a calculation that takes a second once the conversion is habitual.

What none of this produces is a system. Reading a margin tells you what you are paying, not what will happen, and a market with a narrow margin is still a market where you can be wrong. The arithmetic above is for knowing the cost of a position, which is a different thing from knowing the value of one.
